Easy Tips For Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Blood sugar imbalances can be associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gum and dental disease, kidney disease, eye disease and blindness, fatigue, weight gain and mood disturbances.

If you think that you might have a blood sugar imbalance, start checking your blood sugar with a glucometer for at least a few days and under different conditions.  This will show the correlation between the types of food that you eat, your activities and your stress levels.  Start by checking your blood sugar first thing in the morning.  Immediately upon waking up, your blood glucose should be below100 mg/dL.  If it is not, here are some things that you may want to try.  If it is in range, you might want to try them anyway, to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level.

1. Focus On Including Protein At Breakfast:

If you’re only going to do one thing, then make sure to eat some protein at breakfast every morning.  Aim for at least 10 grams.  If you’re in a rush, then have a low-glycemic shake with protein.  I prefer organic whey from grass fed cows that is cold processed.  Organic, free range eggs are also great.

2. Know That Blood Sugar Response Is Quite Individual:

We all react so differently to the same foods.  For example, some so-called “healthy” foods, such as whole grains, actually spike blood sugar in some individuals, but not in others.  Similarly, watch out for too much sugar and fructose.  In many individuals, fructose will spike blood sugar, whereas whole fruit will not, even though whole fruit contains fructose.

3. Eliminate Wheat:

The book, Wheat Belly, by William Davis, M.D., explains how the kind of gluten found in the mono-culture wheat we grow in the United States is often metabolized in the body just like sugar!  If you want to really get serious about your blood sugar, try to stay away from grains completely for a month or so and see how you do.

4. Check Your Stress Levels:

If you’re eating well, but under a lot of emotional stress, it may cause high blood sugar.  You might also notice that you’re putting on weight.  Stress releases cortisol and cortisol spikes blood sugar.  Excess emotional stress will spike your blood sugar.  Coffee on an empty stomach can also spike blood sugar because caffeine causes the body to release cortisol.

5. Consider Supplements:

If your blood sugar is higher than the ideal numbers, there are supplements you can take that really help control blood sugar while you’re improving your diet.  Green coffee extract and Gymnema sylvestreare are two good options.

6. Use Stevia:

Stevia is a natural, non-caloric sweetener that doesn't have the side effects associated with artificial sweeteners

7. Exercise To Burn Off Excess Cortisol:

When you are stressed, the excess cortisol produced by the body is part of the adrenal response.  It is designed to help you run away from a threat!  The problem is that our modern stresses are not the kind you can run away from.  Exercising can therefore reduce contisol levels.
