Ex-Ramsey Teen Set Fire To His Former Borough Home: Police

Robert Madan Jr., 18, was arrested after police found him breaking into, and setting fire, to a townhouse on Carol Street, police said.

RAMSEY, NJ — A borough man was charged with arson after police said he set fire to his former borough home Tuesday.

Police went to a Carol Street townhouse at about 3:15 p.m. on a report of a break in. They found Robert Madan Jr., 18, of Montvale, inside the home and confronted him, said Chief Bryan Gurney.

Police noticed heavy smoke inside the townhouse that was coming from an attached garage, Gurney said.

The Ramsey Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Residents in the nearby townhouses were evacuated, the chief said. No one was hurt.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the Ramsey Fire Department investigated what happened and determined that Madan used to live in the townhouse, Gurney said.

Gurney congratulated everyone involved "for their quick response and professional handling of this arrest."

Madan was charged with arson, burglary, weapons possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and three counts of illegal possession of prescription drugs. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a bail hearing.
