Free Lunch: Morano's To Give Away All the Hot Food It Has Left

Eatery on E. Main Street will start cooking hot lunches for residents at 11 a.m. Thursday

Power remained knocked out to 95 percent of Ramsey Wednesday afternoon, including most of the borough’s businesses. A few, like Ramsey Hardware and Brady’s at the Station, have opened using generator power.

But, for many of the food businesses in Ramsey, the widespread power outages left by Hurricane Sandy pose a problem – what to do with all the food.

Morano’s Gourmet Market has decided to give it away.

Starting at 11 a.m. Thursday, the owners and staff say they will be cooking hot lunches and serving them for free to customers for as long as their food supply lasts.

“We know that people need it, and we don’t want to throw away this food,” one of the owner’s told Patch. “We would like to see the food go to people in our town.”

The deli, bakery and eatery has been semi-operational since the storm, running some refrigeration units on a very small generator.

“We can’t bake, but we can cook – we can fry, grill and boil. And, we can keep everything hot in sternos,” the owners said.

The eatery provided food to emergency responders in Ramsey working during the storm, and Thursday morning will start cooking for the rest of the town.

“We hope the people who really need it come,” owners said.
