MATH. Many students shudder at the mention of math class, and find math to be their most challenging and frustrating subject. Math skills build upon one another, so if you fall behind learning one concept, it can be very difficult to catch up and keep up. This leads to many students giving up on math and adopting the attitude that they are simply “not a math person”. But math class doesn’t need to be stressful! By making just a few changes, you can boost that math grade and make more sense of all those numbers, formulas, and problems that stumped you in the past!
Tip 1: Stay on Top of Homework
Homework is a way to reinforce concepts learned in class, and spending as little as half an hour every night tackling your math homework can help cement those concepts in your brain for test day. Like anything, practice makes perfect! Falling behind on homework can add to the stress of learning new material in class, so keep up & don’t procrastinate!
Tip 2: Ask Questions
So you’re staying on top of your homework, but now you’ve come across a problem that you can’t figure out. Don’t skip it and ignore it; make a note to ask your teacher the next day. Not understanding one problem today can multiply until you’ve fallen behind.

Tip 3: Raise that Hand
A reiteration of Tip #2, but if you have a question in class, ask! Many students shy away from asking or answering questions, because they think giving a wrong answer will make them look stupid. If you have a question, chances are other students have the same question too, and offering answers, even if they are wrong, helps you stay engaged and better understand what you are learning.
Tip 4: Get Ahead
Your homework is finished for the night no problem, now what? Take 10 mins to skim through your textbook and see what is coming up. Getting your brain primed for the following day’s lessons can help you make the most of your class time.

Tip 5: Slow Down
Math class is not a competition! When completing work in class or during tests, take the time to read every question carefully, double or triple check your work. Making silly mistakes can add up (no pun intended).
Tip 6: Review
Don’t discard homework or tests without checking what answers you got wrong and figuring out where you got off track. Fixing a mistake and learning from your errors will help you stay on track and not make the same mistake twice!
Tip 7: Don’t Stress
If a concept isn't making sense, don’t get too frustrated. Take a break, and return to it. If that doesn't work, try calling a friend or asking a parent to help. If that doesn't work, ask your teacher. If necessary, get some extra help outside of class. There are so many options for helping math make sense, so there’s no need to stress!
