83-Year-Old Man Charged In Bergen County Homicide

One man was shot and killed in a Hasbrouck Heights homicide, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Saturday.

John C. Wisse, 83, was charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of Gerald Velardi Jr., 58, Molinelli said on Twitter.

Wisse was a tenant in the multi-family home Wisse owns at 1 Passaic St., authorities said.

Velardi Jr. called 911 at 5:58 p.m. Saturday and said that a downstairs tenant was shot, Molinelli said.

A verbal argument took place and Velardi was shot once in the chest, Molinelli said. Velardi’s body was found in the rear of the house. Wisse was found upstairs with a .38-caliber handgun.

Judge Lisa Firko set Wisse’s bail at $750,000 Molinelli said.

Authorities are investigating the matter, Molinelli said.
