Natural Migraine Treatments

If you get migraines, they can be a are a huge problem. They affect millions of people and are responsible for billions of dollars in healthcare costs.  The can be incapacitating.

What triggers a migraine headache may far removed from the head itself.  Migraines may be caused by many other factors. Let’s go through some of the things that can cause migraines, because 10 people with the exact same symptoms may have very different underlying causes.

What’s causes migraines?

Sensitivity to foods
like peanuts or dairy or eggs.  With some patients, if you remove the food trigger, the migaines stop.

Gluten allergy - This is a special kind of food allergy that creates a lot of inflammation. Many people are sensitive to gluten, but they don't even know it.  Gluten is the protein found in wheat, barley, rye, oats, and spelt.

Hormonal imbalances - Many women get premenstrual migraines, which is often caused by imbalances between too much estrogen and not enough progesterone.  This can be worsened by stress; by consuming too much alcohol, sugar, flour, and starches and by not getting enough exercise or sleep.

Vitamin B deficiency - Some people who don’t get enough riboflavin get migraines.

Imbalances in melatonin - Newer studies have shown that this may be related to sleep cycles, which can be improved with melatonin supplementation.

Magnesium deficiency -
Magnesium is the relaxation mineral. If you’re deficient in it, you can often get headaches and migraines.

Spinal Subluxations - Irritation of spinal nerves can contribute to or cause migraine headaches.

1. Try an elimination diet to get rid of the common food allergens.

2. Try magnesium -Take 300 to 600 milligrams twice a day in the form of magnesium glycinate or citrate.

3. Try riboflavin or vitamin B2, 400 milligrams a day. It will turn your urine a dark yellow, but don’t worry about it.

4. Premenstrual migraines can be lessened or eliminated by exercising, eliminating caffeine, alcohol, sugar and eating a diet rich in plant based foods, especially the broccoli family, flax seeds and other vegetables and fruits.  If that doesn't work, see a physician who does saliva testing of your hormones during a full menstrual cycle.  You may respond well to bio-identical hormones from a compounding pharmacy.

5. Chiropractic Adjustments - I have had good success treating migraine headaches in my chiropractic practice.  I use chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic laser and trigger point work to treat migraines.  My first migraine patient was my mother.  She suffered from migraines for decades when I was growing up.  Her migraines were greatly diminished in intensity and frequency through chiropractic treatment.
