Stress can creep up you slowly, or hit you like a ton of bricks.

Humans are geared hormonally and neurologically for primitive times. It is in our DNA. The modern human body and mind has not had enough time to adapt to our modern day stresses.

During primitive times, humans were well prepared for the stress of those times. Stress would usually come in the form of physical danger. Our adrenal response would kick in and we would be ready to run, fight or freeze. After the stress was gone, as long as they were still alive, things would return to normal.

The problem today is that we have stressors that last for hours, days, weeks, months and sometimes even years. Modern day stresses are usually related to health issues, relationship issues, friends, family, finances and faith. It can be like being chased by a wild beast through the wilderness for years!

1. If your stress is over decision making, why not sit down and write out the advantages and disadvantages of each choice?. Try to think logically, but also consider the emotional component. Talk to friends, family members or a professional about your decision. Try to carefully consider all of your input, before making a decision.

2. If the stress is over a situation that you are in, think of where you are and where you want to realistically be. Then make up a time schedule with action steps to get where you want to be. This time schedule should have short term and long term goals. That time schedule can be tweaked along the way. It may take longer to get there, but at least you have a game plan, instead of just stressing over a situation that is going nowhere.

Stress can also lead to many health issues and most diseases have a stress component. Over time, stress can contribute to digestive problems, cardiovascular disorders, sleep disorders, anxiety disorders and even cancer.

Chronic stress impacts our body’s chemistry by increasing the production of cortisol and other stress hormones.

Exercise, good nutrition, meditation, getting out in nature, laughter and prayer can all help.
