Oakland, Ramsey Students Named Presidential Scholars

Sydney J. Lee and Sabrina R. Casavechia were chosen out of more than 4,300 United States students who were nominated.

Two Bergen County residents were named U.S. Presidential Scholars Monday.

Sydney J. Lee, of Oakland, attends Keystone National High School in Bloomington, Pa.; Lee’s most influence teacher is Sophie Shao.

Sabrina R. Casavechia, of Ramsey, attends Ramsey High School. She said her most influential teacher is Christopher Frangione of Mahwah.

Only 141 high school seniors in the United States make up the 51st class of presidential scholars.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored nearly 7,000 students since it was founded in 1964.

Of the more than 3 million high school seniors expected to graduate this year, only 4,300 were nominated to be presidential scholars.

Lee and Casavechia will be honored in at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. June 21.
