Residents Asked to Conserve Water During ‘Heavy Demand’ Season

Ramsey residents looking to water their lawns this summer better check the calendar before turning on their sprinkler systems.

The borough issued a water conservation notice this week reminding residents that starting May 1, watering is only permitted on certain days. According to the notice, failure to adhere to the restrictions could lead to further conservation methods.

“With finite natural resources and all neighboring communities looking to meet their residents’ water usage demands, water conservation becomes an essential part of life in our communities,” the notice says. “This need for conservation is only heightened by the extremely dry weather period we have seen over the last several months. Ramsey officials say a recent dry spell is one of the reasons for the restricted water usage rules.”

From May 1 to September 30, watering will only be allowed according to the following schedule:

• Properties East of Railroad Tracks – Watering only Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday
• Properties West of Railroad Tracks - Watering only Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
• No sprinkler usage is allowed on Fridays
• In-ground watering systems may only run from 4-7 a.m.
• Above-ground watering systems may be used from 4-8 p.m. only
• Hand-held hoses are allowed everyday

The above restrictions on Ramsey’s water, which comes both from borough wells and United Water, are in place every year, the notice says.

Violations of the rules could result in tickets.

The water conservation notice comes about a month after the borough announced both water and sewer rates would be going up again this year.
