Clean Communities Fall Litter Pick-up Program Under Way
As the weather starts to cool down, groups are spreading out across Morris Plains to pick up trash and recyclables
MORRIS PLAINS – As the weather starts to cool down, groups are spreading out across Morris Plains to pick up trash and recyclables that have been thrown out along roadways and in parks during the summer months. Their work really makes a difference. It’s an ongoing task to stop people from tossing trash out their car windows at stop lights and leaving bottles and snack wrappers in our parks – so these group help to keep us litter free.
Litter is unhealthy, unsightly, and most people don’t realize that it can be a safety hazard, too. Our parks not only have baseball and soccer fields as well as open areas, but also has well-used playgrounds, so there is chance that broken bottles and crushed cans could lead to injuries.
The groups that participate receive grant funds from the NJ State Clean Communities Program. This fall the group from the MHS Friends of Fencing made a special effort in one of our residential areas. They were thanked by local residents and car horns and waves from people driving through as they worked. Cub Scout Pack 233 always does a great job over at Watnong Park and Boy Scout Troop 39 can always be counted on to clean the area past the recycling center on Route 53. Girl Scout Troops 6120, 6845, 4904, 5081, 6261, Brownie Troops 5702 and 6845, MHS Boys Soccer Boosters, Girl Scout Service Unit #155 and the MHS Tennis Club did park and residential areas.
