12 Reasons to get healthy for the holidays

With the holidays upon us, I tried to think of a theme that I can use to discuss being healthy for the holidays so I came up with the 12 reasons to getting healthy. Each day for the next 12, I will discuss one topic. In no specific order, here is the first topic.

Depression. It has been shown that there is an association between obesity and depression. A recent study was performed on 4,600 women between the ages of 40 and 65. The results showed that more than 25 percent of those with a body/mass index or BMI (a ratio of height to weight) higher than 35 showed signs of depression while only  6.5 percent of the women who had a normal BMI were depressed.

In another study, researchers found a 25 percent increase in the risk of developing mood disorders among the obese. The stigma of being overweight plus limited physical activity could contribute to depression, researchers say.
