Camp Phoenix alumni Alexandra Pennington of Middletown to star in The Music Man at the Count Basie Theatre

"The skills I learned at Camp Phoenix prepared me to succeed at theatre auditions, such as The Music Man," says Alexandra.

Last summer, Alexandra Pennington enrolled in Camp Phoenix, the summer theatre day camp in Red Bank, NJ. Currently, Alexandra, will star as Amaryllis in Phoenix Productions’ upcoming revival of the hit Broadway musical, The Music Man, at the Count Basie Theatre.

Alexandra Pennington is in the 5th grade and lives in Middletown. She made her Phoenix debut in the April 2012 production of The Wizard of Oz as a Munchkin in the ensemble. 

Shortly after The Wizard of Oz, Alexandra enhanced her Triple Threat theatre skills at Camp Phoenix. “I learned acting techniques, dancing skills, and how to sing Broadway showtunes,” she says.

At Camp Phoenix, Alexandra worked with the professionals who cast and produce Phoenix Productions’ full scale musical revivals at the Count Basie Theatre. Alexandra says, “the staff worked with me on improvisation, accents, blocking, and stage directions.”

“The skills I learned at Camp Phoenix prepared me to succeed at theatre auditions, such as The Music Man,” says Alexandra.

Alexandra is looking forward to performing on the Count Basie stage again in The Music Man. She says, “performing at the historic Count Basie Theatre has built my self-confidence. When I am on the Count Basie stage, I feel powerful.”

Camp Phoenix is back for another year of Triple Threat theatre training at the Phoenix Rehearsal Center. The program has recently been expanded and features four available session for youngsters (ages 7-10 and 10-13) and three available sessions for teens (ages 13-17). Each session will culminate in a performance showcase for family and friends.
