I Was Run Over By An SUV. Here’s What I Learned

When the unexpected happened, my life changed for the next six months. Check out how this incident changed me as a person forever.

So much in life is unexpected. I certainly didn’t anticipate getting (literally) run over by an SUV—an incident from which I emerged with a broken leg, a compression fracture in one of the vertebrae of the lower back, and a significant concussion.

For me, the last half of 2011 was difficult, frustrating, and even annoying at times. I just wanted to keep going as I had always done. I’m an active guy—anyone who is a patient in our office knows that I’m constantly moving, always working to give everything to our practice and to my family. I thought I could keep going—and I was wrong.

In particular, having a concussion meant that I often felt dizzy and experienced vertigo. Of all of my injuries, these symptoms are what finally brought me to a place where I had to admit that something serious had happened to me, and that I had to stop and allow myself to recover. Otherwise, I would be of no use to anyone, including both my family and our patients.

I’m thrilled to start the new year by returning to practice. I’ve received the green light from my neurologist and I’ll be back on the floor, listening to patients, helping them find solutions for their painful conditions, and treating them.

I’ve missed all of our patients. I’d love to offer everyone—both new patients and returning patients—the chance to see what I do here and get a complimentary visit with me. Kindly let us know when you’ll be coming by calling at 732.345.1377.

If there’s a lesson in all of this, and of course I believe there is, it’s that we need to take the time to let our bodies heal after a trauma. If you’re in pain, don’t let mental blocks stop you from getting help. Denial is counterproductive, and waiting only makes things worse. I look forward to seeing all of you again.
