Scared To Try Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is not only painless and anxiety-free, it's actually used to relieve pain and anxiety. Read more to assuage any lingering fears you may have about this highly effective treatment.

Relax… not only is acupuncture not painful, it’s used to relieve pain. Many patients find the treatment so relaxing that they fall asleep on the table and wake up to find long-lasting changes in their mood and physical condition.

Let’s address why so many people are afraid of acupuncture: fear of needles. It’s important to point out that the needles used for acupuncture are as thin as human hair and are flexible. By contrast, the needles used to take blood or administer vaccinations (for example) are stiff and thick. They need to be in order to force substances into the body or remove blood.

In many cases, the insertion of acupuncture needles provides minimal or even no sensation at all. The entire procedure is meant to re-establish the healthy, normal flow of energy in the body. It can help with many conditions, including back pain.

Acupuncture is offered at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation for the relief of pain and other symptoms. Here’s what one anxious patient had to say about her experience with acupuncture in our Red Bank office:

Because of a previous bad experience at a different office, I was scared to try acupuncture again. However, I’d been having some anxiety and sleep disturbances and wanted to give it another try. [The acupuncturist at Monmouth Pain and Rehabilitation] listened to all of my concerns and was completely understanding about the nervousness I was feeling in his office. He also listened carefully to everything I had to say and answered all of my questions. Placing the needles was painless—and I’m terrified of needles. I found that after all of my reluctance to try acupuncture again, I was disappointed when the session ended. I loved being in the relaxing atmosphere of the office and noticing the various effects of the acupuncture itself. I also felt more relaxed than I had in a long time and fell asleep with no difficulty that night.
