Houghtaling and Downey Host Senior Summer

Free eye screenings to be held in August.

As members of the General Assembly, a large part of our role involves crafting legislation designed to better the lives of our constituents. But what our constituents may not realize is that our work to support them extends well beyond the State House.

In an effort to engage with and support the residents of our district, we regularly host community outreach events, wherein we, along with our staff, provide invaluable resources and services to the members of our community. Our most recent outreach initiative, Senior Summer, works to engage our local senior community, in particular.

Here in Legislative District 11, we have a vast senior population and we strive to make sure this community is properly supported. Ensuring this community is well informed of both the health and service resources available to them is our duty as Legislators and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide our constituents with that vital information.

Throughout Senior Summer, we have hosted a discussion on diabetes with local Pharmacist Ritesh Shah, a roundtable focused on memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with the Alzheimer’s Association, and a Veterans Claims Clinic with representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs. During each event, we have had the opportunity to provide dozens of local seniors with health and service-based discussions and clinics to ensure they have the resources they need to live happy and healthy lives.

Engaging with local residents is one of the most rewarding aspect of serving in public office. With each outreach event, we are reminded of why we ran in the first place: helping you. We have been so grateful for the opportunity to connect with our constituents through Senior Summer thus far and look forward to our next event this August, a free eye screening at the Freehold Township Senior Center on Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We hope to see you there!
