Legislation Would Automatically Reimburse Property Tax Increases

The bill, sponsored by Assembly Members Houghtaling & Downey, would automatically reimburse seniors for property tax increases.

OCEAN TWP -- Monmouth County Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have sponsored legislation that would automatically reimburse low-income seniors for increases in their property taxes by transforming the senior freeze property tax rebate program into a credit program. A credit for property tax increases would be applied directly to the property tax bills of eligible seniors.

“Our office runs a tremendous outreach program to help local residents learn more about and apply for Senior Freeze, but there are still too many people living on a fixed income who are enduring ever-increasing property taxes,” said Downey (D-Monmouth), “By transforming this program we can help seniors by providing real-time property tax relief.”

The Property Tax Reimbursement Program, commonly known as Senior Freeze, reimburses seniors aged 65 and older for increases in their property taxes from year to year. Eligible seniors receive a rebate after providing proof of property taxes paid. This bill (A-4608) would transform the program from a reimbursement program to a credit program, directly applying the credit to residents’ third and fourth quarter property tax bills.

“As a retiree myself, I know how difficult it is living on a fixed income. Receiving a reimbursement after the fact often just isn’t good enough for those on a tight budget,” said Houghtaling (D-Monmouth), “This bill will not only deliver savings to seniors and disabled residents, but save taxpayer dollars by cutting administrative costs to the state. It’s just common sense.”
