Local Biz: Your Driver with Your Car

R. Lucas Drivers arranges drivers to get you to your destination in your own car.

Summer on the Jersey Shore means fun. There are bars to hit, music acts to catch and margaritas to drink, making travel potentially dicey.

Wayne Stock, part owner of R. Lucas Drivers, suggests making summer travel a little safer this season and let one of his drivers man the wheel.

"We feel like we're making roads a little safer," says Stock of his year-old service that provides drivers to operate customers' vehicles.

And while drivers are happy to shuttle folks to dinner in Long Branch and Asbury Park, the service can be used to get customers to the airport, New York City and sporting events as well.

The most unusual request Stock said he's had was to bring a college student back to school — all the way to Cornell University, about 250 miles and a four-hour-drive from Monmouth County.

The pool of about 17 drivers for R. Lucas Drivers has made all sorts of drives, from driving a group of teenagers to a Yankees game to getting couples to the ballet at Lincoln Center. R. Lucas has even started shuttling carpools to work.

Stock says he also makes giving back to the community a priority as well and has contributed toward getting the Red Bank's Boondocks Fishery, battered by Hurricane Sandy, back up and on its feet and is a corporate sponsor for LunchBreak.

"We want to feel like we're not just another business," he said, "but that we're helping the community as well."
