Local YMCA Swimmers Excel at National and State Meets

The Community YMCA Aquarockets swim team saw success at two recent meets. In February, senior level swimmers excelled at the elite Grand Prix meet in Orlando, where they had a unique opportunity to compete against more than 500 athletes and members of the USA Swimming National Team. The Grand Prix is a top qualifying event, with several meets scheduled throughout the year. It was an achievement that our Aquarockets swimmers attained certain top qualifying times to attend and swim in this meet with U.S. National Team members. Three of our swimmers qualified for finals: Jackie VanLew – 200M Free; Chris Tucker- 100M Back; and, Eddie Healy – 200M Fly.

The Aquarockets 12 and under swimmers also excelled at the NJ YMCA State Championships meet on February 28-March 2 at the Ocean County Y. Along with winning the meet, several swimmers broke team records as well. The following are the results for the top sixteen finishers:

Ages 9-10: Isabelle Erskine, 10: third in the 200 free (2:17.73), fourth in the 50 breast (36.71), seventh in the 200 IM (2:38.72), seventh in the 100 IM (1:13.77), eighth in the 100 breast (1:24.45), thirteenth in the 100 free (1:05.38).  L.W. Mehl, 10: fifth in the 50 back (33.31), eighth in the 200 free (2:20.34), tenth in the 100 free (1:04.29), tenth in the 50 breast (38.89), twelfth in the 50 free (29.29), twelfth in the 100 breast (1:25.65). Julia Nappi, 10: first in the 200 IM (2:30.71), first in the 50 breast (35.82), first in the 100 breast (1:16.24), second in the 100 IM (1:10.29), fifth in the 200 free (2:20.45), tenth in the 100 free (1:04.83). Kaila Scarpa, 9: thirteenth in the 100 IM (1:16.14), sixteenth in the 100 back (1:16.75). Haley Stamberger, 10: sixth in the 50 free (29.14), fourteenth in the 50 breast (40.52), sixteenth in the 100 breast (1:28.42). Kevin Truscio, 10: tenth in the 50 fly (32.19), twelfth in the 100 fly (1:14.09), fifteenth in the 50 breast (39.88). The girls 200 medley relay team of Izzy Erskine, Julia Nappi, Kaila Scarpa and Haley Stamberger placed second (2:10.54). The boys 200 medley relay team of L.W. Mehl, Christopher Hulstart, Kevin Truscio, and Morgan Cecil, placed sixth (2:15.69). The girls 200 free relay team of Julia Nappi, Jessica Zebrowski, Izzy Erskine and Haley Stamberger, placed second (1:59.70). The boys 200 free relay team of Christopher Hulstart, Thomas Crow, Morgan Cecil and L.W. Mehl, placed eighth (1:59.86).

Mitchell Malakhov, 12: twelfth in the 500 free (5:39.08), fourteenth in the 200 back (2:23.22). Taylor Marjamaa, 12: fourth in the 500 free (5:31.62), twelfth in the 200 free (2:05.97). Marcel Milewski, 11: seventh in the 500 free (5:37.13), eleventh in the 100 free (56.80), eleventh in the 50 free (26.28,) eleventh in the 200 free (2:03.21). Caroline Monaghan, 12: ninth in the 200 breast (2:40.42), eleventh in the 100 breast (1:15.62), thirteenth in the 200 back (2:22.91). Maddi Piasecki, 12: first in the 500 free (5:18.74), third in the 100 free (55.01), third in the 200 free (2:00.31), seventh in the 50 free (26.22), ninth in the 100 fly (1:03.15), tenth in the 50 fly (28.88), eleventh in the 100 IM (1:05.19). Skylar Shafritz, 12: seventh in the 50 breast (33.58), eighth in the 100 breast (1:15.05), thirteenth in the 50 back (30.80). Richie Trentalange, 12: third in the 200 fly (2:18.41), fourth in the 200 back (2:13.88), sixth in the 50 fly (27.98), seventh in the 100 fly (1:03.29), eighth in the 100 back, (1:02.94), tenth in the 50 back, (29.66), twelfth in the 100 IM, 1:05.37). Katie Wright, 11: third in the 200 breast (2:38.55), sixth in the 500 free (5:34.99), eighth in the 20 IM (2:21.77), thirteenth in the 200 free (2:06.48). The girls 200 medley relay team of McKenna Johnson, Skylar Shafritz, Victoria Ireland and Maddi Piasecki placed third (1:56.86).  The girls 200 free relay team of McKenna Johnson, Maddi Piasecki, Erika Brown and Mary Mahoney placed second (1:45.99). The boys 200 medly relay team of Richie Trentalange, Ryan Burke, Evan Mahns and Marcel Milewski placed second (1:55.02). The boys 200 free relay team of Ryan Burke, Evan Mahns, Will Dean, and Marcel Milewski placed second, (1:42.26).
