Navesink River Rowing Club Rows 393 Indoor Miles in 4 Hours

1st Ergathon Held at Monmouth Crossfit

Tinton Falls, NJ — On January 28, 2018, in its inaugural Ergathon event, 29 Navesink River Rowing Club members rowed indoors for up to four hours each at Monmouth Crossfit to raise funds to purchase new rowing equipment. The event gets it name from the Concept2 indoor rowing machines, also called ergometers or ergs.

The 29 rowers represented a cross-section of both Masters and Youth club members. From 8 am to 12 pm, the participants rowed a combined total of 633,000 meters—the equivalent of a trip from Red Bank, NJ to Buffalo, NY—with many individuals rowing the distance of a full marathon, 42,195 meters.

Youth Coach, Sean Murphy noted, "Over the winter the club members spend a lot of time training and racing on ergs. The Ergathon was a way to get everyone together, challenge ourselves to complete a tough task, raise money for competitive equipment and have fun."

Trish Russoniello who completed 32,782 meters, winning the top spot in the Individual Women Master category stated, "This Ergathon was a challenge—it was well organized and fun. The playlist kept me ERGing strong. It was a successful first-time event."

Monmouth Crossfit and John Crilly's Navesink Indoor Rowing provided the space and equipment. McLoone's Restaurants sponsored prizes for Masters category rowers, and Hansel N Griddle sponsored Youth rowers.

Assistant Youth Coach, Tim McAuliffe, noted, "Our club members and their families appreciate the backing from McLoone’s and all of our sponsors. We are a member-funded club, and we wouldn’t be able to replace worn equipment without the support our community provides." The event raised just over $4,000 that will contribute to the purchase of a new racing shell.
