Red Bank Charter School Offering A STEM Twist On Summer Camp

The five-week program is open to both students and non-students of the charter school.

Looking for a way to feed your child’s interest in science, math and technology? Want something that isn’t your typical summer camp?

The Red Bank Charter School is offering a five-week Summer Institute that it says has a ”comprehensive STEM-based curriculum.”

“Students will explore alternative energy sources in a ’Ride Like The Wind’ engineering workshop by building a prototype wind turbine. They’ll don life-jackets as ’River Rangers’ in a weeklong tour of our local waterways in student-built canoes. They’ll develop teamwork skills in a canoeing competition with peers -- culminating in a technology-driven story-telling activity using graphics, music and video,” a news release from the school says.

“Younger students will seine the Navesink ’Down By the Sea’ as budding marine biologists. They’ll also experience ’Life on a Farm’ and learn about the importance of sustainable organic farming, and how to harvest nutritional snacks,” the release says.

The Summer Institute runs from July 6 to Aug. 7. Registration is open to current students of the charter school as well as non-students from Red Bank and surrounding communities.

“Extending learning experiences through the summer months can help to improve academic performance, and create opportunities for students to engage in an enriched and supportive community year-round,” RBCS Principal Meredith Pennotti said. “We are thrilled to expand our program to a wider community.”
