Red Bank: Shrewsbury Ave Apartments Hearing Moved To July 15

Testimony for a 20-unit building dubbed "The Parker at Shrewsbury" with two affordable units has been pushed to next month.

RED BANK, NJ - Following a three and a half hour-long testimony on a proposed two-building apartment development on Shrewsbury Avenue, Red Bank zoners decided to carry the hearing over to a July 15 meeting.

During a Thursday zoning board meeting, developer Roger Mumford sought preliminary and final major site plan approval for two buildings, dubbed "The Parker at Shrewsbury," at the corner of Shrewsbury Avenue and River Street. The applicant is seeking the approval of 20 apartments (mostly one-bedrooms), 3,826 square feet of ground-floor retail space and 34 parking spaces.

Two of the units would be restricted for affordable housing.

At the meeting, zoners called the plan a concern given its height and unit density, as well as too-narrow sidewalk plans.

“Go down to three stories and I might be more inclined” to approve the developer’s proposal, said Zoning Board Chairwoman Lauren Nicosia.

Board member Raymond Mass noted that the exterior of the building looked “too stark.”

A pedestrian plaza was also planned for the corner of River Street and Shrewsbury Avenue, according to zoning board documents.

While zoners weren’t fond of the current proposal, the development has already gone through several plan revisions since the site was first proposed, originally planned as a four-story building with 6,300 square feet of retail space and 23 units.

The next zoning board meeting will be held on July 15 at 6:30 p.m.

A separate hearing scheduled for a 10-unit building at 273 Shrewsbury Avenue with retail space and on-site parking was postponed until the board’s next in-person meeting on Sept. 2.
