Jonathan Maslow was an accomplished author, journalist, documentary filmmaker, naturalist, and environmentalist. At the time of his death, he was an editor and columnist for the Herald News in Paterson.

This scholarship is open to all RBRHS students in grades 11–12 who plan to continue their education at an accredited two- or four-year college immediately following graduation. Students with an interest in contemporary journalism, creative writing, or environmental issues are encouraged to apply.

About the Howard Whitfield Masonic Scholarship

The Whitfield scholarship honors the memory and lifelong achievements of Howard Whitfield. Out of necessity, he began working at age 13 to earn a livelihood and always desired to obtained a degree in liberal arts and/or the sciences. But, Mr. Whitfield was unable to complete his formal education.

Because of his deep and abiding love for Red Bank and Monmouth County, Mr. Whitfield established a scholarship to assist RBRHS graduates in developing their potential, achieving their goal of obtaining a postsecondary education, and becoming successful and productive adults.

Applicants should have achieved a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better and will be evaluated based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community service, work (paid or unpaid), and demonstrated unmet financial need.

To apply for either scholarship, create a profile in the CFNJ online portal and complete the application by April 6, 2026. Students can also obtain paper applications from the guidance office at RBRHS.

Any questions regarding the scholarships should be directed to Colleen Smith at csmith@cfnj.org or 973-267-5502.
