What To Look For In A Divorce Attorney
When going through a divorce, it is crucial to choose an attorney with whom you feel comfortable who is also capable of providing superior representation.

When I inform people that I am a Divorce Attorney, the typical reaction is one of consternation, in that they imagine that it is a difficult job emotionally and mentally. Unfortunately, they are correct. However, I actually love my job because I have the mindset that I have the opportunity to help people cope with one of the most stressful and painful periods of their life.
The relationship between a divorce litigant and their attorney is quite unique and much different than a typical attorney-client relationship. While, as I will discuss below, the ability to skillfully handle the legal and financial aspects of a divorce case are of paramount importance, the personal relationship of trust and confidence is, at times, equally important. Your divorce attorney will become intimately aware of all aspects of your life, especially when you have children, such that choosing an attorney whom you trust and are comfortable with is vital.
I strive to show compassion to my clients by understanding that, at times, they simply need someone who can listen to their problems and permit them to vent about their frustrations. As I am often called on to provide advice on how to appropriately handle aspects of their relationship with their spouse and their children, it is imperative that I truly learn about the individual and their family. In the end, I believe I am my client’s partner in navigating the emotional and personal aspects of going through a divorce.

To be clear, however, one should not take my compassion for my client’s strife as a sign of weakness as it relates to litigating a case and fighting for the best financial outcome for my client. Rather, the compassion is a filter which serves to ensure that the litigation process does not destroy the dissolving family.
With that said, it should be clear that when the situation calls for it I am more than willing and capable of persuasively and mercilessly fighting for my client’s rights. I am able to do so with a strong litigation background, which enables me to effectively craft an argument from any set of circumstances, including creatively molding the facts to the law.

More importantly, my strong financial background provides a true understanding of the complicated financial underpinnings of many cases which many lawyers lack and/or need to hire expensive experts to sort through. This is crucial in relatively straightforward financial cases (i.e. W2 wage earners, standard asset base, etc.), but is of paramount importance in complicated financial matters where determining the true earnings of a spouse and accurate values of a business or other assets is necessary. This lack of financial competence results in "cookie-cutter" divorce settlements which are inappropriate in a field where the financial realities and goals and needs of every litigant is unique.
Most importantly, while many divorce litigators take ownership of their client’s case, in the sense that it is now the attorney’s case to “win”, I am mindful that it is the client who always owns their case, and my role is to serve as an adviser, advocate and champion of their cause.
