Xeriscaping with the Garden Club R.F.D. in Middletown

LEARN TO ZERISCAPE WITH THE GARDEN CLUB R.F.D IN
MIDDLETOWN

Ever hear of Xeriscaping?  If
not, join the members of Garden Club R.F.D. at The Little Red Schoolhouse in
Middletown to hear Bob Mellert, Master Gardener, present a program about
it.  The Little Red Schoolhouse, an historic site, is located at the
corner of Dwight and Middletown Lincroft Roads across from Thompson Middle
School and it will be the site of this fresh look at Xeriscaping that the
American Heritage Dictionary defines as “A trademark used for a landscaping
method that employs drought-resistant plants in an effort to conserve
resources, especially water.”

A Xeriscaped landscape would utilize
native plants, plants growing in New Jersey for thousands of years without our
help; indigenous plants that have adapted to the amount of yearly precipitation
in our area.  Many offer year-round interest and have interesting colors
and shapes.  Native grasses, for instance, can  provide movement and
hardscapes such as rocks, stones and statues will also add interest.  With
a Xeriscaped garden, the water requirements are low and pruning and weeding
should be minimal.  Both are desirable goals to attain.

To illustrate, think about the Yucca
plant—a superstar in the world of Xeriscaping.  This oh-so-low water needy
plant thrives in almost any soil type so long as there is good drainage.
It is happy in both sun and part shade.
