BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — NJ Transit plans to charge as much as $100 for World Cup fans to take mass transit from New Jersey's MetLife Stadium to New York City this summer, reports say.
The agency told Patch on Tuesday that prices haven't been finalized — but that the eight matches may cost NJ Transit as much as $48 million.
A report in the New York Times on Tuesday cited unnamed sources as saying that the transit agency will charge the increased amount for return tickets that normally would cost $12.80.
During special events, the agency runs trains from the Meadowlands area — including MetLife Stadium and the American Dream complex — through Secaucus Junction to New York City and Hoboken.
NJ Transit spokesman Kyalo Mulumba told Patch Tuesday, "As the governor has clearly stated, the cost for the eight matches will not be borne by our regular commuters. We can confirm that the overall cost to the agency is approximately $48 million for the eight matches."
The transit agency has scheduled a press conference in early May to talk about its plans for the games, which kick off on June 13. Eight matches are planned at the stadium in East Rutherford, located on Route 3.
Among other plans that have raised eyebrows is a proposal to close portions of Penn Station, a New York City rail hub, in the hours leading up to each match.
