BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Two firefighters were sent to the hospital on Sunday after fighting a two-alarm blaze in Bergenfield, officials said.

Firefighters responded around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday to the fire at a two-story home on Brown Place, said Fire Chief Ryan Zadrozna.

Deputy Chief Edward Kreisler reported heavy smoke billowing from both floors, Zadrozna said.

Neighbors had alerted the residents of the fire, and they escaped with no injuries, officials said.

But two firefighters were taken by ambulance to Holy Name Hospital for treatment for heat exhaustion, the chief said. Other firefighters were evaluated at the scene and cleared to continue working, Zadrozna said.

The blaze took five hours to extinguish, Zadrozna told Patch on Monday.

He said the two firefighters were released from the hospital later on Sunday and were back on full duty.

After the blaze was extinguished, crews from Englewood, New Milford, Tenafly, and River Edge came to help remove debris and "locate any remaining pockets of fire."

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday, Zadrozna said.
