Was That A Tornado? Bergen County Residents Post Videos As Storms Cause Floods, Damage

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Did a tornado strike Bergen County on Tuesday? Residents in the area posted photos and videos of a possible touchdown, but the National Weather Service said Tuesday that they could not confirm a tornado in the county.

A tornado warning was issued from 2:50 until 3:15 p.m. in Bergen County and surrounding areas. The warning stated that wind rotation had been seen on the radar.

Residents posted photos asking if they might be signs of a tornado, with this one taken in Ridgefield Park:

Flooding Traps Cars

Several highway lanes were closed and people were trapped in their cars after thunderstorms caused flooding in Bergen County earlier Tuesday.

"The train underpass on Franklin Avenue flooded and two vehicles were submerged," said Glen Rock Police Captain Glenn Ender on Tuesday. "Both vehicles we occupied by just the driver and they both got out safely."

The vehicles had to be towed, Ender said. The road reopened by 1:30 p.m.

But lanes of major highways remained closed Tuesday afternoon. More storms were expected later on Tuesday.

Around 400 Bergen County residents in total were without power after the storms as of 5 p.m., reported Orange & Rockland Power and PSE&G.

Around noon, the state's Department of Transportation reported that one of two right lanes was closed on Route 208 North near Maple Avenue in Fair Lawn.

Also, flooding caused two of three right lanes to close just after 11 a.m. on Route 17 southbound in Ho-Ho-Kus.

Disabled vehicles on the George Washington Bridge closed one right and one left lane after 11:30 a.m., 511NJ.org reported.

Storm damage also slowed train lines in North Jersey.

A flood watch was issued until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

"Please use caution and don't drive through flooded roadways!" warned the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management.
