Lightning Strike Sets Fire To Ridgewood Home: Officials

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A lightning strike set a Ridgewood house on fire Monday night as severe weather rolled through the area, officials said.

Ridgewood firefighters got a report of smoke at 225 Goffle Road shortly after 7 p.m., accidentally to Fire Chief John Judge.

Crews confirmed that a fire was spreading inside the walls and piping areas, Judge said.

A subsequent investigation determined the cause to be a lightning strike, Judge said.

No civilians or firefighters were harmed, he said.

The fire was extinguished and the scene cleared by 9:30 p.m., he said.

Night Of Damage

Fires are just one of the hazards reported during Monday's storms.

Lanes of two major highways through town — Route 17 and Route 208 — were closed due to downed wires and flooding. NJ Transit temporarily suspended its Pascack Valley Line due to the floods.

As much as five inches of rain are in the forecast for Bergen County on Tuesday, with the most rainfall expected at night.
