BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Neighbors in Cliffside Park are raising money for a local family whose son, 5, was killed during a vacation in Ecuador.
The borough of Cliffside Park posted on social media on Tuesday, "Vanessa Gonzalez is a dear friend who is facing every parent's worst nightmare. While on vacation in Ecuador, Vanessa's in-law family and her son, Zechariah Diaz, were involved in a car accident. Tragically, Zechariah passed away.
"Vanessa is now in Ecuador with her husband by her side, far from the love, comfort, and support system waiting for them back home in New Jersey. On top of this devastating loss, the family is now facing the difficult and overwhelming process of handling arrangements in another country, a process that may take 20 to 30 days before they are able to return home."
The town linked to a fundraiser for the family.
$21,000 had been raised by Wednesday afternoon.
