Eight Bergen County Schools Make Annual U.S. News 'Best High Schools' List

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — The magazine U.S. News & World Report has released its annual rankings of the best high schools in the state and country — and as usual, several in Bergen County made the lists.

The 2026-2027 Best High School Rankings, released Monday, include not only regular public high schools, but also countywide magnet schools, public charter schools, and specialized STEM schools that can pick and choose their students.

However, private and parochial schools are on a separate list.

Eight Bergen County high schools made the list of the top 50 in New Jersey, and two of those landed in the top 100 nationally.

Two At The Top

The highest ranked was Bergen County Academies, Hackensack, at number 6 in the state. The school also ranks in the top 100 nationally, at number 78. Like many on the list, it's a magnet school that can choose from among the top students in Bergen County.

Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro comes in at number 8 in the state and 84 nationally.

Others in the top 25 are: Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest, number 18, and Tenafly High School at 23. Tenafly is the only non-regional school in the top 25 in the state.

Also in the top 50 are: Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale at 35, Glen Rock High School at 39, Ridgewood High School at 43, and Ramsey High School at 45.

How Many?

The top 10 public schools on the list are all regional, specialized, or magnet schools.

The top three schools on the New Jersey list are:

1. High Technology High School, Lincroft — 28 nationally
2. Edison Academy Magnet School, Edison — 40 nationally
3. Union County Magnet High School, Scotch Plains — 59 nationally

U.S. News said they evaluated about 27,000 eligible public high schools nationwide and ranked nearly 18,000 of them. In New Jersey, they looked at 522 high schools in 347 districts.

Schools are usually evaluated on how effectively they serve all students, including underserved populations, with college readiness specifically measured, the magazine said.
