Major League Baseball Player Turned Bergen County Teacher Has Died

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A former professional baseball player who also taught in the Bergen County public schools has died.

Frank James Caradonna, 87, grew up in Waldwick, graduated from St. Luke's High School, played baseball at the University of North Carolina, got married in Ridgewood in 1961, and raised his family in Ho-Ho-Kus, his obituary says.

Caradonna played with the Washington Senators for three seasons, the obituary says. He played shortstop, second basement and third baseman in 1961, 1962, and 1963, according to online baseball records.

After that, Caradonna became a physical education teacher for 25 years in Saddle River, and obtained his certification from the state to officiate baseball, football, basketball, and soccer.

He spent his final years in Naples, Fla. and died on Friday. Read his obituary here.
