HACKENSACK, NJ — Hackensack firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a man with his hands crushed in a machine at work, officials said.
Around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, according to fire officials, the department was investigating a possible appliance fire on First Street when they were notified of a "man in machine" incident a few blocks away.
They headed to South Newman Street to treat a person who had crushed both hands in an industrial press, officials said.
The person was able to pull their hands out of the machine, "but was experiencing a large volume of blood loss," the Fire Department said in a statement.
Employees at the site treated the victim.
When the police and fire departments arrived, each one applied a tourniquet.
The person was then taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center.
Officials called OSHA to follow up at the site, firefighters said.
