NORWOOD, NJ — A two-alarm house fire in Norwood on Tuesday prevented homeowners from being able to get to their pet dog — but firefighters saved the day.
Police Christian Federici said that just before 2 p.m., police and firefighters were sent to a fire in a home on Glenn Avenue, near Tappan Road.
Police saw flames and thick black smoke coming from the garage, Federici said.
A resident of the house told police that a pet dog was trapped inside, and that the person was not able to reach the pet because of the smoke and heat.
Firefighters were able to enter the home and remove the dog, Federici said.
The fire was put out quickly, with damage mostly to the garage and the car inside.
The home is uninhabitable for now, he said.
The Norwood police posted a message for residents on social media around 3 p.m. saying, "Fire department activity on Glenn Avenue has forced the closure of southbound Tappan Road between Broadway and Blanche avenue. We are attempting to keep the northbound lane open through school dismissal. Updates will be made if the traffic pattern is changed." (Updates will be here.)
Fire departments from Northvale, Harrington Park, Closter, Demarest, Emerson, and Old Tappan provided mutual aid, Federici said.
