BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Pres. Donald Trump told voters to pretend he was on the ballot during Congressional elections on Tuesday — and in some places, he actually was.
Voters in Bergen County wrote his name in for certain races on Tuesday, as well as the names of cartoon characters and various slogans.
In every election, particularly when the results are predictable, voters sometimes take the opportunity to express frustrations, or sense of humor.
On Tuesday, voters in more than a dozen Bergen County towns chose council or other school board members. They also were able to cast votes in the Senate and Congress races.
Slipped A Mickey
In races involving favored candidates like incumbent Sen. Corey Booker and Rep. Josh Gottheimer, voters wrote in Mickey Mouse and many others.
For Booker, write-ins included "Revoke Consent of Governed," Jesus Christ, Alex Pretti, Trump, Joe Biden, Steven Fulop, Jim Morrison, George Washington, Derek Jeter, Mamdani, Karl Marx, and the Grinch.
For Gottheimer, people wrote in Eugene Debs, Barack Obama, "A Socialist," Jesus (again), sad sack "Sopranos" chef Artie Bucco, and of course, "My Best Friend Dave."
In the county executive race, incumbent Democrat James Tedesco was leading Republican Todd Hennessey as of Wednesday at 4 p.m. by a vote of 197,768 to 109,211.
Five people wrote "Free Palestine," one voted for "New Minds," and someone supported "My Dog Ruby."
People got creative in school board races.
In Washington Township, voters wrote Jaxson Dart, "Someone Normal," Anyone Else, Parents, and Scooby Doo.
In Westwood's school board race, Mick Jagger, James Bond, and Crusty got the nod.
Other names in the races were "Both Parties Lie" (several times), Ron Jeremy, Term Limits, Cable Guy, Snoopy, Betty Boop, and children's author Dav Pilkey.
But of course, there were serious candidates and serious questions on the ballots. For instance, in Franklin Lakes, voters contemplated whether to have a deer hunt, with the results close. Read more about that here.
