In a speech given at her retirement celebration, Hamilton colleagues spoke to the many lessons she had taught them–from building a community with the students, staff, families, and community at large, to various initiatives.

“Irene has also taught us the lesson to always show up," they said in the speech. "She was rarely absentand always present for the students and staff.

She attended many after-school events, from the Great Pumpkin Walk to the Color Run.

"Irene has taught us the lesson of being a lifelong learner," noted a release from the district. "She always encourages us to acquire new skills and approaches to instruction. Irene exemplifies this by still attending workshops for the purpose of being more informed and a good resource and motivator for others.

"She made Hamilton feel like a second home and has shown up for the staff during some of the most important milestones in their lives, moving many of them with her kindness and compassion."

Colleagues said, “Each child has a place in her heart. Irene has made the child our focus at Hamilton and that will be her legacy.”

So what's next?

“I’d like to first take some time to rest,” Pierides said.. “I do have plans to travel, volunteer, and spend quality time with friends and family. I’d still like to work with children and teachers in some capacity. Life is a journey; I will go where it takes me.”

She added that she feels grateful.

“As I walk away, my heart is full with memories of all the spectacular children of Hamilton who have passed through its doors," she said, "gratitude for the many parents who dedicated their time in creating a loving and magical place for children, and a deep appreciation for the teachers who touch children’s lives every single day!”
