Bergen County Teacher And Wyckoff Resident Who Made Science 'Phun' Dies

A woman who taught high school in Bergen County for 15 years died on Monday.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A longtime North Jersey high school science teacher died on Monday at 94.

Mary Lou Ciavarra of Wyckoff was married for 55 years to her elementary school sweetheart, Vincent, her obituary says. She earned a master’s degree from Montclair State and taught science in high schools in Maplewood and Belleville, then eventually at Indian Hills High School in Oakland for 15 years. The school serves Wyckoff, Oakland, and Franklin Lakes.

She won the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award in 1998 and was known for putting the "phun" in physics, her obit says. Read more of her obituary here.
