Bergen County Teen Stabbed In 'Planned Attack' After Basketball Game: Police

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A New Milford teen was stabbed on Friday night after a pickup basketball game in a Bergenfield park, police said.

Two teens have been charged in the attack.

Police in Bergenfield said that around 8:44 p.m. on Friday, they were dispatched to Veterans Memorial Park, 241 New Bridge Road, on a report of a stabbing.

Police found an 18-year-old New Milford man stabbed twice in the chest.

The Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded and treated the man, who was alert.

The victim was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in stable condition, with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Witnesses provided information about two teens who had fled in a gray Nissan Altima.

Investigators determined that a 17-year-old male from Dumont was was the intended target of a planned attack by two "known juvenile males from Bergenfield," but the victim intervened after the pair tried to assault the target.

Police soon found the fleeing car and two suspects, who were 16 and 17 years old, from Bergenfield.

The 16-year-old was charged with aggravated assault, weapons charges, and tampering with physical evidence, police said.

The 17-year-old was charged with simple assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.

Both were taken to the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center to await further action by the Bergen County Superior Court Family Division.
