My father was the principal of Hackensack High School for 22 years, IN HHS from 1954 to 1992. For those 22 years, his top salary, including his leave, was $88,000 a year. He was there at 6:30 in the morning every day, 24/7, around the clock. Now, administrators make $200,000; he didn’t even break $90,000. He was begged for months, to come to Hawaii to be a superintendent. Dad said no; his loyalty was to Hackensack. Mom would say, might be a new experience. Well, no Blooms were in education for money. Wherever we went, Dad said, that’s one of my kids, that’s one of my kids; his teachers, his students, and even their grandparents were his kids. I took him to a doctor. He said, " Your grandmother was in my home room in 1967. She lived on this street. She had a white squeaky fence, and she had a skinny boyfriend, The girl said that skinny boyfriend, is my grandfather, they still live in that house. Dad said, tell her, say hello to your mother. Does she still work here? She’s getting ready to retire. When you graduate, come to my house, show me your deploma. He remembered everybody to the very end; He was in it for the love of it, Not for the money. A number of us can only imagine what the world would be like if he were in the White House with his team. I wouldn’t want it to kill him. He didn’t sleep worrying about his people. I wouldn’t want to see him there, but we’d be in a lot better shape. State Dept of Ex. Said Get rid of this many teachers 'cause you have to cut salaries. Dad would say no, they have families and homes; he would switch line items and create new positions. State Department had people from all over the state learning how to do that from my father; all that for $88,000 a year. It was for the love of the job, the kids, and the people, different cultures in the community. He was so UNIQUE.
