Price of Gold Changing Taylormade Jewelers

Service still a hallmark of the business, owner says.

Much has changed in the 28 years since Chris Taylor opened at 223 Rock Road in Glen Rock.

A full-service mid-range jeweler and gemologist with a full line diamonds, watches, stones, Taylor says the skyrocketing price of gold is quickly transforming the market.

"It's changed the complexion of the business," he said. As a result, silver is a better value for customers and sells well.

Other non-gold items, particularly diamond rings and precious gems, also entice buyers. Taylormade carries Alison-Kaufman, IDD Diamonds, Lorenzo and Karisma.

"We've always been very service oriented," the Hawthorne resident said. "That's really the niche for a downtown jeweler."

Mall stores, he noted, often have a large and ever-changing staff and can't provide the personal touch.

"We also do quite a bit of custom work with engagement styles," he said, remarking that pretty much any piece can be altered.

And if the customer isn't satisfied?

"We have a very liberal customer return policy," Taylor told Patch. "It's the advantage and disadvantage of being small."
