Code Blue Issued In Bergen County: Here's How To Help Someone Homeless Or Cold

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Where can someone go if they have no heat, or if they're out in the cold amid freezing temperatures this week?

Because of the temperatures, the county of Bergen has activated its "Code Blue" protocol, providing help and warming centers for those who need them, according to the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management.

A Code Blue Alert has been issued through Friday, Feb. 16, 2024.

The OEM said they call for a Code Blue when: "According to the National Weather Service (1) the temperature will reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower; or (2) a windfall temperature of zero degrees Fahrenheit or less for a period of two (2) hours or more."

When a Code Blue is activated, the county will find a warming center for people who need it for the overnight hours.

They noted, "If you are aware of any unsheltered homeless individuals or find yourself homeless in need of a warming center, please call the Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center at 201-753-7762 for assistance or call 2-1-1 to access a shelter."

The temperatures are expected to drop to 22 on Wednesday night. Temps will start to warm up again on Friday.
