Tropical Storm Ophelia Could Impact Bergen County Saturday

A tropical system could bring wind gusts and and inch of rain to Bergen County Saturday (the first day of fall 2023), forecasters say.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — The Northeast has been lucky to avoid another Hurricane Sandy, but tropical depressions and sudden downpours have been equally devastating in the region.

Now, the National Hurricane Center says that Tropical Storm Ophelia could bring flooding impacts to the Mid-Atlantic States this weekend. (Track it here.)

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties calling for rain and potential flooding.

"Low pressure will likely bring periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, coastal flooding, beach erosion, and dangerous rip currents on Saturday. Some of these impacts may linger into Sunday," says the outlook.

Earlier in the week, the National Weather Service said, "A non-tropical area of low pressure is expected to form east of the Florida peninsula late this week. This system could acquire some subtropical characteristics this weekend while it moves generally northward. Regardless of development, this low is likely to bring gusty winds, heavy rain, and high surf to portions of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic United States late this week and into this weekend."
