Athletic Director And Former Assistant Principal In Bergen County Dies

A football coach, athletic director, and husband of a current principal in Bergen County has died, officials said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Gordon "Scooter" Whiting, a Bergen County athletic director, former assistant principal, and husband of a middle school principal, died Friday, officials said.

"There are some people whose presence becomes woven into the fabric of a school community," wrote Hackensack Athletics on social media on Saturday. "Gordon 'Scooter' Whiting was one of those people, and for generations, the story and tradition of Hackensack Athletics has included his name. There are truly no words for the loss our Hackensack community is feeling today."

The Record of Hackensack reported that Whiting died two days after the Hackensack Board of Education officially accepted his retirement at their May 13 meeting. He was 58.

A former football coach, he was married to Hackensack Middle School Principal Joy Whiting.

"Praying this morning for our middle school principal and friend, Dr. Joy Whiting and family, on the passing of her husband Scooter Whiting" wrote a friend on social media. "A longtime Hackensack resident and teacher whose family is well entrenched on this community. May God grant them peace and comfort in this season."
