Group Ranks Valley Hospital 'A' For Safety

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The Valley Hospital received an "A" grade for safety by a respected nonprofit group, one of three Bergen County hospitals to receive such a ranking.

The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit founded by employers and healthcare providers, ranked 68 New Jersey hospitals as part of its Spring 2017 safety grades.

The hospital scored above average in each of the five categories. The hospital scored below average in two areas addressing infections and in one area regarding surgery. Click here to read the full report.

Leapfrog looked at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections to determine the grades. The goal is to determine what a patient's risk of further injury or infection is if they visit a certain hospital.

Two other Bergen County hospitals, Holy Name Medical Center and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center also received "A" grades.

According to the organization, more than 1,000 Americans die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals.
At the state level, New Jersey was ranked 15th in the nation. Maine was ranked No. 1. Hawaii, Oregon, Wisconsin and Idaho rounded out the top five.
