Interactive 'Sing Along Sound Of Music' Coming To Bergen County

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — If you're a fan of the 1965 Oscar-winning movie musical "The Sound of Music" but also have a sense of humor about it, an upcoming North Jersey event is for you.

The interactive "Singalong 'Sound of Music' " first toured Europe and the United States in the 1990s, drawing fans of the Oscar-winning musical that starred Julie Andrew and Christopher Plummer. Guests could sing, boo the Nazis, and dress as their favorite characters.

Now the show will run for two nights at the American Dream retail/entertainment complex in East Rutherford.

The three-hour film follows the adventures of an imaginative nun who's sent away from her abbey to become a governess for seven children of a widowed Naval captain.

Amid the backdrop of the coming Nazi takeover of Austria, the pair fall in love. But Captain Von Trapp is already engaged to a wealthy baroness (who, incidentally, avoids all talk of politics). The captain is increasingly concerned about the encroachment of fascism.

How can love survive?

The film is based on the true story of the Von Trapp family, who escaped to America in 1938. While much has been made of the fact that Hollywood changed elements of the real story, the family was in danger after they refused several requests from the Nazis — even to sing at Adolf Hitler's birthday party. They obtained six-months visas to America, then sought help to stay longer. They were ultimately able to make a living by touring.
