Man Defrauded Teaneck Resident Out Of $10K, Police Say

TEANECK, NJ — A Neptune man was charged in an "identity theft and fraud scheme" in which he stole almost $10,000 from a Teaneck resident, police said.

Benjamin Grinley, 34, was charged with identity theft and other offenses on Aug. 18, police said.

Deputy Police Chief SethKriegel said that on Dec. 10, a Teaneck resident reported that someone withdrew $9,850 from his bank accounts.

The victim later learned that the funds had been withdrawn from a bank in Flemington.

Det. Selena Sustache launched a "comprehensive" investigation involving subpoenas, video surveillance, and banking records from multiple locations, police said.

Eventually, Grinley was identified and charged with theft by deception, identity theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and false government documents.

Police couldn't find him at first, but he was stopped on Aug. 18 by state troopers.

He was brought to to the Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center, where he awaits his first
appearance in Bergen County Superior Court, police said.
