BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A temporary lockdown of the Fairleigh Dickinson University campus in Teaneck on Monday was caused by something said by two dog walkers, according to police.

The Teaneck police said that around 10:32 a.m. on Monday, their department got a call from Fairleigh Dickinson security saying that there might be a person with a gun in the Northpointe parking lot of the Teaneck campus.

Police met with security and with a civilian. The latter said that while walking through campus, "they were stopped by two people who were walking dogs. The dog walkers told the complainant that there may be a person with a gun in the Northpoint parking lot."

The dog walkers left the area, walking across the foot bridge from Teaneck to Hackensack, said Teaneck police.

The random pedestrian then stopped a security guard to report what he'd heard.

FDU security put the school into "shelter in place" mode and notified the police.

Police checked the parking lot and campus. The Hackensack police were notified and checked the Hackensack campus.

Nothing suspicious was observed, and police could not find the dog walkers, they said.

All buildings were checked, and the school was taken out of lockdown at 11:53 a.m., police said. They got no more calls about the incident.

Police said that they and FDU security are reviewing video footage related to the incident, to try to find the dog walkers.
