PARK RIDGE, NJ — Police in Bergen County often publicize found pets, and sometimes they take a humorous tone to attract attention. But commenters seemed to go out of their way to add to the merriment on Sunday when the Park Ridge police crowed about a rooster they'd found.

"Usually our officers eat chicken tenders," the police posted Sunday morning. "They don’t become chicken tenders. It appears we have a Barred Rock rooster that was located near 27 Kinderkamack Rd."

Apparently the bird is starting to annoy them.

"Please come take your chicken home," they wrote. "He’s very pretty but his crowing is distracting while typing reports."

The announcement led to some fowl (word) play on the part of the commenters.

One woman admitted she was resisting the "overwhelming" urge to make double entendres, and another called the officer in the photo "fine." Someone simply called the jokes "hilarious."

But one commenter had a serious explanation.

"Lots of people get chickens and once they realize they have a rooster they let them go," she wrote. "I hope this is not the case but if you need a place to rehome him please reach out." (If you're a city slicker and wondering why folks would prefer a chicken, it's all about the eggs.)

In any case, a Park Ridge police spokesperson said the bird was handed off to Bergen County animal control for safe keeping.

And incidentally, he was found in front of a house, not crossing the road.
