Ridgewood Resident Scammed Out $2,600, Police Said

A Godwin Avenue resident wired more than $2,600 as part of a mail employment scam earlier this week, Ridgewood police said.

The resident received a solicitation in the mail from an alleged health care company offering the person employment and bank checks totaling more than $2,600, police said. The person was to deposit the checks into his or her personal bank account and wire the money to a client using Money Gram.

By the time the checks were determined to be fraudulent, the victim had already wired funds from his or her personal account, police said.

This type of scam has been targeting elderly and unemployed people, but recently, police said, college students seeking part-time employment have also been targeted.

Police urge residents to report any suspicious mailings or scams by calling the department at 201-652-3900.
