The Valley Hospital Foundation's Women For Health Selects Simulation Learning as 2014 Grant Recipient

At the 2014 Women For Health Fall Luncheon, members of the Vally Hospital Foundation’s Women for Health selected The Valley Hospital’s Simulation Lab as their 2014 grant recipient. The group will donate $118,000 to enhance the simulation learning program at Valley.

Formed in 2011, The Valley Hospital Foundation’s Women For Health has grown from 30 charter members to its current membership of 118 women from Bergen and Passaic Counties. These women have pooled their social and philanthropic resources to assist The Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care in providing the best possible healthcare. Each year the members gather to hear presentations on three funding opportunities at Valley and then vote to determine which program will receive their collective gift.

Simulation learning is a bridge between classroom learning and rea-life situations. With its origins in the military and the airline industry, simulation is now coming of age in health care. This type of adult learning helps healthcare professionals to evaluate individual and team performance, and develop hands-on skills in high-risk situations. High-tech simulation mannequins and computer-generated scenarios are the core of this type of adult learning.

The hospital is already using an adult female mannequin, a baby mannequin, and a pediatric mannequin in training scenarios throughout the hospital. The gift from Women For Health will be used to purchase an adult male mannequin, as well as various body parts that are used to develop competency in specific tasks and skills such as IV starts, catheterization, and chest tube insertion.
