NORTH JERSEY — Spring may be just two weeks away, but patches of snow and ice remain on North Jersey sidewalks due to the blizzard on Feb. 23. And weather experts are still considering whether the storm met the requirements to be called a blizzard.

But preliminary research says the storm was a blizzard in certain parts of North Jersey, said the National Weather Service on Friday.

The coastal storm — appropriately — impacted the coast the most.

The NWS office in Mount Holly made a similar statement Friday, saying the storm conditions rose to blizzard status in six South and Central Jersey counties.

"Blizzard criteria are met when sustained winds or frequent gusts of at least 35 mph, accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow, frequently reduce visibility to less than 1/4 mile for 3 or more hours during an event," noted the NWS.

"The exact start and end times of blizzard conditions in these areas will be documented in NWS StormData," they wrote. "Further analysis will also be conducted to determine if any additional zones reached blizzard criteria with this event. All verification data are considered preliminary until certified in NWS StormData."

The highest snow total confirmed in Bergen County was 27.9 inches in Carldstadt. In Central Jersey, a spotter in Freehold reported 26 inches.

Meanwhile, no snow is in the forecast for the coming week. Thunderstorms are possible in Bergen County overnight into Sunday, and temperatures will rise to 71 degrees on Tuesday, then dip.
